The Fall Career Fair Is Coming: Help Your Student Get Career-Ready

As students move through their second, third, and final years, the connection between their college experience and what comes next becomes increasingly important. Whether your student is exploring career options, searching for an internship, or preparing to launch a full-time job search, Career Services is here to help.
One of the biggest opportunities of the semester is our Fall Career Fair taking place on September 24 from 12:30–2:30 p.m. We encourage all students to attend and to start preparing now. It can be tempting for students to think, “I’ll go next year,” “I’m not looking yet,” or “I can just apply online.” But attending a Career Fair offers something an online application simply can’t: the opportunity to make a personal connection.
For those in their second year, the fair is a chance to explore employers, learn about career paths, discover internship possibilities, and begin building a professional network.
For those in their third year, the fair becomes even more important. Many employers recruit well in advance for internships, and students can use the event to identify opportunities, make connections, and position themselves for future openings.
For those entering their final year at Fisher, the job search starts now, not after graduation. Employers may already be recruiting for upcoming full-time opportunities, and waiting until the final semester can mean missing valuable opportunities to connect with organizations and recruiters.
Why Attend the Career Fair?
No matter where students are in their career journey, the fair allows them to:

Learn about internships, full-time positions, and potential career paths.
Discover employers and industries they may not have previously considered.
Ask recruiters what they look for in candidates.
Practice introducing themselves and talking about their skills and experiences.

Students don't have to know exactly what they want to do before attending. Sometimes one conversation at the Career Fair can introduce a student to a career, employer, or opportunity they didn't even know existed.
Before the Fair: Get That Résumé Ready!
A strong résumé can make a big difference when meeting employers, and Career Services is making it easy for students to get feedback before September 24. During the weeks leading up to the Career Fair, Career Services will offer Walk-In Résumé Review Sessions. Students can stop by for a quick review, get feedback, make improvements, and ensure their résumé is ready to share with employers. Parents and families can help by asking one simple question: “Have you had Career Services look at your résumé yet?” Even students who already have a résumé can benefit from another set of eyes, especially if they haven't updated it recently to include summer employment, internships, campus involvement, volunteer experiences, projects, leadership roles, or new skills.
New This Year: The Career Closet
Wondering what to wear can add unnecessary stress to preparing for a career fair or interview. Professional clothing can also be expensive, particularly for college students who may only be beginning to build their professional wardrobe. Our new Career Closet provides students with access to professional attire they can use for career fairs, interviews, networking events, internships, presentations, and other professional opportunities. We encourage students to visit the Career Closet before the fair and find something that helps them feel comfortable, confident, and ready to meet employers. Simply schedule a time via Handshake, it’s that easy!
Update That LinkedIn Photo!
A student's professional presence doesn't end when they leave the Career Fair. Students will also have the opportunity to get a professional LinkedIn headshot at the fair. If your student's current LinkedIn photo is a cropped vacation picture, an old high school photo or they don't have a photo at all, this is an easy opportunity for an upgrade! A professional headshot can help students strengthen their LinkedIn profiles as they begin connecting with recruiters, alumni, professionals, and potential employers.
Parents and Families: Encourage Them to Go
A little encouragement from home can go a long way! If your student says, “I don’t need to go,” remind them that the Career Fair is about more than finding a job, it’s a chance to make connections, explore opportunities, and build confidence. Career readiness develops throughout college, and every conversation and experience helps prepare them for what’s next.
