Student Code of Conduct

Each member of the St. John Fisher University community plays a part in creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful campus.

The Student Code of Conduct exists to support the academic mission of the University and promote the growth and development of students.

All St. John Fisher University students, faculty, staff, visitors, and guests are expected to comply with federal, state, or local laws. Additionally, students and student organizations are subject to the Student Code of Conduct. Any behaviors that are alleged violations of the Code of Conduct will be addressed through the University conduct process. Ignorance of these policies does not excuse any behavior that is a violation.

The following behaviors are prohibited:

  • General Misconduct
    • Actual or attempted actions, whether on or off campus, that negatively impact, threaten, or create a reasonable fear for the physical health, mental health, or safety of individuals or infringe on the rights of others;
    • Actual or attempted behavior that is disruptive of normal University operations or instruction.
  • Dishonesty & Falsification
    • Knowingly misrepresenting, omitting, or furnishing false information to the University or University officials;
    • Forging, altering, or misuse of University documents or any form of identification;
    • Unauthorized examination, use, removal, or destruction of either electronic or hard copies of any University records, files, papers, or documents;
    • Tampering with University elections;
    • Possession of false identification or any other misrepresentation of one's identity.
  • Alcohol & Other Drugs
  • Discrimination
  • Harassment
    • Abuse, threats, bullying, intimidation, stalking, or behavior that unreasonably interferes with, threatens, or endangers another individual. Harassment may include verbal, written, physical, and digital communication and actions, whether direct or through a third party.
  • Hazing
  • Violation of Law
    • Conduct that violates applicable state, federal, or local law regardless of whether criminal charges are filed, prosecuted, or resolved.
  • Safety & Security Violations
    • Unauthorized access to or presence in/on campus, campus facilities, or restricted areas;
    • Knowingly violating a Persona Non Grata status or assisting an individual in the violation of their Persona Non Grata status;
    • Possession, use, distribution, or duplication of keys or access devices to University facilities without University approval;
    • Misuse or interference with the intended security function of University facilities including doors, windows, emergency buttons, etc.;
    • Operation of non-medical vehicles (skateboards, hoverboards, skates, bicycles, scooters, etc.) inside any University building or on outside stairwells;
    • Possession of an unauthorized animal on University property;
    • Unauthorized operation of a drone on University property.
  • Weapons
    • Possession, implied possession, use, or distribution of any type of weapon or ammunition on University property;
    • Possession of items that could be mistaken for or reasonably perceived to be a weapon. Examples of weapons include, but are not limited to, firearms, paintball and airsoft firearms, knives, explosives, and martial arts tools.
  • Property Offenses
    • Actual, or attempted, theft, damage, destruction, removal, alteration, or vandalism of University, personal, or public property.
  • Gambling
    • Betting or wagering on University activities or athletic events or participating in games for money while on University property;
    • Facilitating raffles or lotteries on University property without University approval;
    • Any form of illegal gambling, on or off campus.
  • Fire Safety Violations
    • Behavior that creates a fire, false or preventable fire alarm, or a fire safety hazard, including tampering with fire safety equipment, or elevators/lifts;
    • Possession or use of flammable liquids, propane tanks, fireworks, explosive devices, canned or compressed gas, poisons, highly combustible substances, chemicals, etc.;
    • Failure to exit during a fire alarm;
    • Blocking the path of egress.
  • Smoking
  • Refusal to Comply
    • Refusal to comply with the reasonable directive of the University, any University representative, or Resident Assistant, written, verbal, or otherwise, acting in the scope of their official duties or with public health directives.
  • Interference with Conduct Process
    • Disruption or interference with any part of the incident documentation or conduct process including falsification of information, attempts to coerce or intimidate a hearing officer, University representative, Resident Assistant, or involved student;
    • Failure to comply with the directive of a hearing officer or body, including interim action.
  • Retaliation
    • Intentional actions intended to prevent, intimidate, or retaliate against an individual participating in the conduct process, including reporting information to the University, or any other University process.
  • Failure of Host
    • Failure to reasonably prevent or report non-member behavior that violates the law, the Student Code of Conduct, or any other University policy.
  • Digital Media and Technology Misuse
    • Misuse of University computer systems, computing facilities, network, or information resources;
    • Unauthorized recording or surveillance in context where recording is expressly prohibited or areas where there is a reasonable expectation of privacy;
    • Use of recording technology to threaten, intimidate, or abuse;
    • Actual or attempted digital impersonation, AI-assisted fraud, phishing, or doxxing;
    • Violations of the University Appropriate Use Policy.
  • Violation of University Policies
