Wegmans School of Pharmacy Hosts CSTEP Day Camp

Students in the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) at Monroe Community College (MCC) received an up-close look at careers in pharmacy during the Pharmacy Day Camp, held on Friday, Aug. 5 and hosted by the Wegmans School of Pharmacy.

The purpose of CSTEP is to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups who are pursuing professional licensure and careers in mathematics, science, technology, and health-related fields. For the last three years, Dr. Sha-Phawn Williams, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration, delivered presentations to MCC’s CSTEP students about the role pharmacists play in the health care field.

“The students enjoyed the presentation so much, I thought it would be great if the they could have a hands-on approach of what a pharmacist can really do,” she said. “With the support of the School’s Diversity Committee, this led to the development of the day camp idea!”

Williams created a full day of events for the students with the help of faculty members from across the School. The day began with a welcome breakfast with Dean Christine Birnie and a panel discussion with pharmacists. Next, the students had the opportunity to create hand sanitizer in the lab and learn how to check blood pressure and blood sugar.

“I look forward to hosting another event like this in the future,” Williams said.
