Spirit of Identity Week Begins on MLK Day
Beginning on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the St. John Fisher University campus will once again kick off a full week of programs and events designed to honor the many cultures, identities, and communities that shape Fisher’s campus.
The annual Spirit of Identity Week, taking place Monday, Jan. 19 through Friday, Jan. 23, highlights events aimed to strengthen connections, celebrate culture, and create spaces where students, faculty, and staff feel seen, valued, and a strong sense of belonging. The annual celebration is organized by the Office of Multicultural Affairs in partnership with Fisher’s student affinity clubs, including the Black Student Union, Latiné Student Union, Muslim Student Association, Asian Student Union, Jewish Student Association, and the Sexuality and Gender Alliance. The First-Generation Committee and Academic Opportunity Programs are also hosting events.
Bianca Genao, program coordinator of multicultural affairs, credits the student affinity club leaders for their dedication, teamwork, and planning efforts. She said that she has also been inspired by the impact of the week, noting the number of faculty, staff, and departments who have reached out to collaborate with the office.
"I hope students walk away with a strong sense of unity and belonging. Spirit of Identity Week celebrates the idea that while our identities may be diverse, our shared humanity connects us. At heart, this week is about building relationships, honoring one another's stories, and intentionally creating a campus community rooted in connection and mutual respect," she said.
The week begins with the Black Excellence Gala and ends with the Shabbat Dinner, and several events in between. For the full schedule, visit the Spirit of Identity Week website. Events are open to all members of the campus community.
