Countdown to Commencement 2022: Abdulhady Homed

Nursing major Abdulhady Homed is the final member of the Class of 2022 to be featured in the “Countdown to Commencement” series. Homed was nominated by Erin Barry, director of the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement at St. John Fisher College.

Homed is a First-Generation Scholar and is on the executive board of the Muslim Student Alliance (MSA) on campus.

Barry first met Homed as a first-year student on campus. He immediately became a leader when stepping foot on campus. He has been an advocate for his peers in the First-Generation Scholar program, started MSA in his sophomore year, led coalitions of staff and students to discuss DEI issues important to campus and the community, and became the voice for many in the Fisher student body.

“Abdulhady challenged my thinking and approach to administration from the moment I became a director at Fisher. He is open, warm, thoughtful, and passionate; and is steadfast in his dedication to helping both the on- and off-campus community,” said Barry. “I am so impressed with his consistent ability to be positive, while also challenging leaders to be progressive around social justice issues. He is a changemaker and so, so talented.”

Barry foresees Homed becoming a “superstar community nurse.” She believes that he will not only help to take care of patients but will also lead the effort to make the entire community stronger than how he found it.

Homed is grateful for every opportunity Fisher has granted him and could not be any more pleased with how his college career has been spent.

“The people I've met, and the things that I've done, there are so many opportunities it gave me - like the abundance of opportunities at a smaller school,” said Homed. “So I took advantage of that. That's why it has made an impact, a very powerful impact.”
