Activities

  • The Writer’s Block is a club for students who have a story to tell and no time to tell it. Our goal is to set aside time each week to give ourselves the freedom to work on creative projects in a space solely dedicated to brainstorming, sharing, and creating.

  • Cavanaugh Reading: Each semester the English department hosts published authors who presents their work in a reading and meetings with students in classes and writing workshops.  Recent Cavanaugh guests have included filmmaker Stephen Belber, novelists Rachel Hall and Tony Tulathimutte, and poets Morgan Parker and T. Clutch Fleischman

  • CAST Shakespeare performances: Each year the English department welcomes performers from the Cambridge American Shakespeare Tour who stage one of Shakespeare’s plays and hold workshops for students.

ANGLES Literary Magazine

ANGLES is a literary magazine edited by undergraduate students at St. John Fisher University that features brief poetry and prose by college-aged writers from across the country—and around the world. In both ENGL 356 - Editing & Publishing and ENGL 209 - Literary Magazine Practicum, students work with applications like WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and Submittable to produce issues of the magazine, gaining both experience in the professional world of publishing and insight into how to prepare their own creative writing for publication.

The Honors in English Program

English majors with a 3.5 GPA in English courses and an overall GPA of 3.3 are able to pursue one of two paths toward a degree with Honors in English. Candidates on either path must earn an "A" on an honors thesis and successfully defend the thesis at an open colloquium. Those students have the opportunity to create the thesis during an independent study sequence in their senior year.
